According to career coach Emily Liou, you only have six seconds to grab a hiring managers attention when it comes to your resume. To make the most of those six seconds we have four main tips that will help you stand out.
1. When looking for a job, you need to optimize your resume to include the right buzzwords. Read the job description and identify the skills the employer wants. Make sure to use the same terminology, so their system will mark you as a match.
2. Instead of listing the activities you did, try to state what you accomplished and how.
3. Keep your resume concise and visually appealing. Simplicity is key.
4. Be sure to use a personal summary at the top of your resume. This showcases who you are to the employer.
5. Keep your resume to one page length and only highlight the most relevant experience.
By using these tips and having gig work, freelance, or per diem work on your resume, it shows your future employer that you are self-motivated, know how to manage your time, and know how to take initiative. See an example of a resume and a visual for our tips below.
